Thomas Levet – No Regrets In Losing 2002 Open Play-Off

Frenchman Thomas Levet says he has no regrets in losing a play-off to Ernie Els in the 2002 Open Championship at Muirfield.

Levet and Els along with the Australian duo of Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby ended regulation play locked on six under par and Levet coming from four shots back and posting a 66 to join the Open play-off.

Appleby and Elkington were the first to drop out and with Els and Levet ending the four holes tied before Els claimed a second Open Championship title.

Levet is this week working with French TV and while he has been helping countryman Gregory Havret on his game, Levet has also been reminded of those events 11 years ago.

“I am fine here in the practice range but when I walk back among the crowd it is difficult as everyone keeps reminding me of what happened in 2002,” said Levet.

“There have been a lot of people who said they were here in 2002 and how much they wanted me to win.

“I think I’ve signed 20,000 autographs already this week so it is very difficult.

“There’s just Ernie and myself here from that play-off as the two Australians are not in the field.

“But I am okay with what happened back then.  That’s golf and I have no regrets.”

Levet was fifth in The Open three years later but his second place finish in 2002 remains a career high in the 22 Majors the Paris-born golfer has contested.
